In the Spring of 2004, at the end of a holiday in the sun, Michaela
was approached by a friendly middle aged man and his wife, who
introduced themselves as fellow Canadians.
Asking
Michaela not to take offence at his remark, the man inquired about
her exercise program, wondering what could
help keep her
in such great shape. In particular, he noticed the fluidity of
her movements, and what appeared to be incredible abdominal strength.
He explained that throughout his life he had practiced a variety
of sports and physical regimens, but none appealed to him as much
as swimming. He had hired a swimming instructor, he said, with
the goal of learning how to “swim like a dolphin”.
Much to his disappointment and frustration, his hard work had not
produced the streamlined fluid movements that so attracted him
to swimming. By watching Michaela walk on the beach, he realized
her method of exercise could be the answer and he expressed great
interest in learning more and trying some of the simple Pilates
moves immediately. He had his first New York Pilates lesson right
there in the hotel lobby!
Afterwards
his wife whispered to him “I told you so”,
and explained to Michaela how she was participating in Pilates
classes, and had tried to convince her husband that Pilates was
what he was looking for. Her passion for Pilates came from how
good it made her feel about her inner self and her body.
It was this enthusiastic encounter with two people who had very
different goals but who found Pilates as the perfect fit, that
convinced Michaela to offer this class at Symmetria.
